Captain Rohit Sharma and his ten co-victors were greeted at Delhi with a heroes’ welcome, thanks to the efforts of Sharionelle Pereira and the ACS Mumbai Commercial Jet team.

After a 13-year absence of any major titles, the Indian T20 Cricket Team reign triumphant once again, having beaten South Africa by seven runs at the T20 World Cup Barbados in late June. The victors had been scheduled to fly back (as with all of the qualified teams) on scheduled flights, but, in the moments after victory was snatched, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) were on the phone to our Mumbai office to charter alternative transport home fitting of their newly-garnered hero status.

Due in Delhi to meet with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence, Sharionelle and her team worked around the clock sourcing an appropriate aircraft at lightning speed. However, Hurricane Beryl, and the lightning-charged storms she brought with her to the Caribbean, threatened to scupper any plans of repatriating the Indian victors; squad members, support staff, families, board officials and the media were all grounded as a result of the stage four hurricane, with Bridgetown’s Grantley Adams International Airport shutting entirely for three days.

Having finally been cleared by air traffic control in the early hours of the 3rd July, the ACS-organised Boeing 777 was one of the first to leave the Bridgetown tarmac post-storm, commencing the 17-hour flight back to Delhi ahead of the victors’ celebratory breakfast with Prime Minister Modi. With excitement building back in India, the team’s aircraft took the title of the most-tracked flight worldwide whilst in the air. With a tight schedule to keep to, it wasn’t long before the team were due in Mumbai – the champions were met on the ground by ACS Delhi’s Aman Arora to ensure all was in order before they boarded the arranged Airbus A321 to Mumbai, ready to participate in a grand Victory Parade later that day. Tens of thousands of cricket fans swarmed Mumbai’s Marine Drive to share in the team’s victory as they made their way to Wankhede Stadium, world cup aloft in the open-top bus.
