About Cannes Film Festival
Cannes Film Festival dates back to 1938, when it was set up as France’s answer to the Venice Film Festival in Italy. Originally called the International Film Festival, the inaugural event was cancelled after its opening night when German troops invaded Poland at the start of the Second World War. The festival relaunched in 1949 and is now one of Europe’s top three film festivals along with Venice and Berlin.
The invitation-only festival is attended almost exclusively by film industry execs and the press. But you can still soak up the electric atmosphere even if you’re not lucky enough to be given a ticket, by watching the action on giant TV screens at the red carpet or viewing film screenings on Cannes Beach.
