CESSNA CITATION II
- Passengers 7
The Cessna Citation II was one of a kind when it entered the light business jet market in 1978. Over 1,000 jets were sold within its first four years on the market and it went on to become one of Cessna’s best-selling private jets of all time. Although it’s now a little dated, the Citation II remains a flexible, comfortable and convenient charter solution.
About this aircraft
- Certified in 1978, the Cessna Citation II is an upgrade of the Citation I, with more powerful engines, a larger wingspan, better fuel capacity, a longer fuselage and increased seating capacity and headroom.
- Most Citation IIs are configured for seven or eight passengers, with an extra seat available in the belted lavatory if needed.
- The Citation II is capable of non-stop flights like London to Cannes or New York to Atlanta, although it has a lower normal range with a full payload.
- The Citation II’s baggage hold has space for around five suitcases.
- Production ended in 1995 and Cessna began delivering the more modern Citation Bravo in 1997.
Able to fly non-stop from Chicago to Dallas, New York to Washington D.C. and London to Madrid, the Cessna Citation II remains one of the best short-haul charter options for up to eight passengers despite its age. Over 600 aircraft were built during its 16-year production run and most are still operational, making it one of Cessna’s most successful aircraft.
Interior design
The cabin of the Cessna Citation II has many possible layouts. One of the most popular accommodates seven passengers, with four seats in a club formation, two forward-facing seats in the rear and one in the front facing the entrance.
There’s also a rear enclosed lavatory and space for a small refreshment centre at the front. Natural light floods the cabin through 12 windows.
Below are some typical configurations found on a Cessna Citation II.

Technological features
The Citation II is powered by two Pratt and Whitney JT15D-4 turbofan engines with 2,500 pounds of thrust each. Inside, modern avionics include a Sperry EDZ-605 2-tube EFIS and a Sperry SPZ-500C autopilot system. In conjunction with the advanced instrumentation, the Citation II flight deck has 340 degrees of visibility for easier navigation.
History
Following the success of the Citation I, Cessna wanted to produce an aircraft that offered reduced purchasing and operating costs alongside increased size and range.
Announced in 1976 and certified in 1978, the Cessna II had a stretched cabin and wingspace along with a greater range and payload. The incredibly successful aircraft dominated the market for 16 years until production ceased in 1995. The upgraded Citation Bravo followed, with improved avionics, range, cruise speed and fuel efficiency.
Manufacturer
Cessna was founded in 1927 by Clyde Cessna and Victor Roos. It was originally called the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company, but Roos’ name was dropped after he resigned just one month into the partnership and sold back his interest to Cessna.
Headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, the company specialised in producing small piston-powered planes and business jets. After becoming one of the world’s biggest general aviation producers, it was bought by General Dynamics in 1985 and by Textron in 1992. In March 2014, Cessna stopped operating as a subsidiary company and joined Beechcraft and Hawker as one of the three distinct brands produced by Textron Aviation.
Cost
A used Cessna Citation II typically costs from $3.6 million (USD).
